Making an Electric Wheel Chair Purchase
By Christopher Luck

WheelchairWhat should you consider when looking at electric wheel chairs? I have elderly relatives in my family who will soon require aid in getting around. Traditional wheel chairs are great if you are younger or stronger, but for the elderly the electric wheel chair seems like the way to go. The only problem is that I don’t know what to look for in a good wheel chair. There are so many choices and prices of different qualities out there. I suppose that the type I choose will be mostly dependent on the needs of the eventual user.

I do know one thing: if you are buying an electric wheel chair, you need to be prepared because it is a big purchase. There are a number of things you should consider as you go into the process. Do you know if the user for whom you are buying is going to need to use the wheel chair indoors and outdoors? With an electric wheel chair you will probably need to know that for sure. What about the weight capacity you will need? Make sure you account for the user’s size as well as anything else that will be on the chair. Also, check into what kind of service agreement or warranty comes with the electric wheel chair you are thinking about purchasing? These are all things to consider, especially when to take into account that an electric wheel chair is a significant financial investment.

By and large, electric wheel chairs are built with those that have very limited mobility or are too weak to work a traditional manual wheel chair in mind. The lack of mobility or strength can be due to a number of factors, but you will have to consider those factors when choosing the chair you want to buy. Electric chairs, however, are very easy to maneuver because most are controlled by a simple joystick located near the hand on the arm rest. Also, when you are looking into your purchase, bare in mind that the joystick, motor, and special add on accessories to electric wheel chairs means that they will need more service than the traditional wheel chairs do. This is just the nature of the beast.

Electric wheel chairs are available in a number of variations today. With new technology and development in design, they are continually increasing in strength, handling ability for the user, and durability. Keep in mind that if you are looking for ease of handling for your user, you will want to lean toward a front wheel drive electric wheel chair. However, if you are in need of more power, the rear wheel drive models are better. Make sure you also consider where the user will be taking the electric wheel chair. Measure before you buy so the user doesn’t find himself unable to pass from room to room.

Buying a wheel chair is not a lot of fun anyway simply because of what it usually means. However, buying an electric wheel chair can be even more of a hassle. They are costly, there is a lot to consider, and the entire process can be confusing. The best thing you can do, though, to make the process easier on yourself is to simply consider the end user. Try to figure out what he or she will need from the electric wheel chair in terms of power, size, capacity, and extra features. Then, consider the service and maintenance you may need to help with any problems that may arise. In the end, by educating yourself, you can find the right electric wheel chair for the person you are looking for.
